Epps Wants Us to Smile About Racism

Comedian Mike Epps wants our nation to be able to laugh about racism at a time when race is a big issue and topic among America and the High Point University FYS-1000 "Talking About Freedom". Along with religion, politics and finances, many would agree that race is a touchy subject. "Black people laugh among each other about things, Jewish people laugh among each other about things. It only seems to be racist when another race talks about another race." Epps said.
Being an African American male myself, I can say that the race card is getting old; whether it’s someone of another race making a comment or someone of my own race making a racist comment in a joking manner. Epps believes that it’s a camaraderie when people of the same race make fun of each other. I agree that we should be able to laugh about racism, but allowing black people to make racist jokes among each other is an opinion that I disagree with. If it is socially acceptable that African Americans can make rude comments to each other, then we're implying that it is acceptable for anyone to make those comments.
To be able to talk about a certain race a certain way, then say that someone else can't make the same comment is hypocritical. "The world has set things up the way it's set up. That's what the show is about," he said. "It's about bringing a light side to it and educating people up on it and showing them, 'Hey, we can laugh at this.' Because racism is real in America right now." At the end of the day, whether I agree with Epps or not; he just wants me to smile.
